The budget airlines have just began to take flight in Asia. To get the
lowest ticket prices you have to be aware of the promotional offers
available from each budget airline.

I made a list of budget airlines and the places they operate in at my
website. I'll be updating the this regularly with the latest promos.

Prices have plunged in the last two years. You can fly Bangkok to

Chiang Mai for $12 on Air Asia.

This is a really nice site. I live in SE Asia and have to fly every
six months for visa renewal. He missed China Airlines to the USA, but
had a bunch I didn't know about.

I doubt $12 covers the cost of the airline for the flight. Most likely
it's a promotional fare only available for a few seats on each flight.

Obviously. However, in Europe too planes are stuffed with zillions of people
who have bought these extraordinarily cheap tickets (there might be plenty
of more than just one or two of them onboard). Three weeks ago I bought a
return ticket from Tallinn to Berlin. For both directions the fare was 99
cents before taxes. The total was no more than 36.xx euros (includes a 6.5
euro "credit card fee", debit card users are exempted from this fee, just
couldn't make mine to work at the airline's web shop). A return ticket from
Berlin to Rome was merely 8 euros more expensive. The carrier is easyjet.

You could fly for about that two years ago, too. Or at least I could.

Regardless of what is possible, a narrow sample of the AirAsia fares I

compiled, shows that the medium fare is pretty close to $35-$40. It is a
bargain price anyways. "Taxes and fees" which is a fixed portion of the
total fare is 537 bahts and equals to about $13.

I fly from Bangkok to Chiang Mai fairly often (5 or 6 times so far this
year). Usually I find the Thai Airways walk-up fare is about $40, with
AirAsia, Nok Air, and Orient Thai (One2Go) in the $25 range. Depends on the
load though.
